The Perimeter Is Dead
The traditional "castle and moat" security model assumes everything inside your network is trusted. With remote work, cloud services, and SaaS tools, that perimeter no longer exists. Zero Trust means: never trust, always verify.

Traditional vs Zero Trust
| Aspect | Traditional | Zero Trust |
|---|---|---|
| Trust model | Trust inside the network | Trust nothing, verify everything |
| Network access | VPN = full access | Per-resource access |
| Authentication | Once at the perimeter | Continuous, context-aware |
| Authorization | Role-based at login | Per-request, attribute-based |
| Network design | Flat network with firewall | Micro-segmented |
| Monitoring | Perimeter logs only | Every access logged and analysed |
| Data protection | Encrypted at boundary | Encrypted everywhere |
The Zero Trust Maturity Model
| Level | Description | What to Implement | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Traditional perimeter | — | Starting point |
| 1 | Identity-centric | MFA, SSO, identity provider | Month 1-2 |
| 2 | Device awareness | Device health checks, MDM | Month 3-4 |
| 3 | Network segmentation | Micro-segmentation, private access | Month 5-6 |
| 4 | Application security | Per-app authorization, VAPT | Month 7-9 |
| 5 | Data-centric | Data classification, DLP, encryption | Month 10-12 |

Book Your Free ScanImplementation Roadmap for Indian Businesses
Phase 1: Identity Foundation (Months 1-2)
- Deploy an identity provider (Azure AD, Google Workspace, or Okta)
- Enable MFA for all users, no exceptions
- Implement Single Sign-On (SSO) for all SaaS tools
- Set up conditional access policies (location, device, risk level)
Phase 2: Device Trust (Months 3-4)
- Implement device health checks (OS version, antivirus, encryption)
- Deploy Mobile Device Management (MDM) for company devices
- Create BYOD policies with containerised access
Phase 3: Network Segmentation (Months 5-6)
- Segment your network into zones (production, development, corporate)
- Implement micro-segmentation for critical workloads
- Replace VPN with Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA)
- Deploy Web Application Firewall (WAF)
Phase 4: Application Security (Months 7-9)
- Per-application access controls (not network-level)
- API authentication and authorization for every endpoint
- Regular VAPT scans to identify application vulnerabilities
- Implement DevSecOps practices
Phase 5: Data Protection (Months 10-12)
- Classify data by sensitivity (public, internal, confidential, restricted)
- Encrypt all data at rest and in transit
- Implement Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules
- Deploy Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB)
